Quniton - Mungo Ridale
Existing Knowledge of Quinton
Most researchers seem to refer back to Ridlon's book about Riddell/Ridel/Ridale family history. Specifically he states for Quintin "??"
What's in a name?
Ridlon states in his book that he was named after a saint "?" He was referring to Saint Quentin (Latin: Quintinus) October 31. Ridlon was slightly mistaken - yes he was named after a saint, however it was a saint of Scotland, 'Saint Kentigern'.
Quinton Riddell can be found in various charters with variations on the spelling of his name. These include:
> Quitono de Redale (1406-1436) > Mungo de Redoll (1435) > Mungo de Redale (1436/37)
> Quintine Riddale (1464/65) > Mungo Ridale (1471)
???
How is Kentigern / Mungo / Quinton all the one name?
Saint Kentigern was referred to by both Mungo and Kentigern during his lifetime. He was given both names ...
A potnetional way Quinton comes into the picture is due to the English language. There was a time period when 'K' was written using 'Qu'. So in this time period Kentigern was written as Quintiern. There is even I location to this day called 'St. Quintiern's Well' in Lilliesleaf.
Put in piece about this location
A family name
There are not many men who have used this name (most come after Mungo within about 100 years) -
Ridlon was slightly incorrect with his statement "name is used only once" as there is a Sir Mungo Riddelle, chaplin in 1540 or 1560 in Scotland.
Who was Mungo's ancestors?
Who Mungo's father and ancestry is in doubt. It has long been believed to be the de Ridale's and even the Ridel's family (depending on the researcher). However when you look at documents and previous research there is doubt.
An example is in Ridlon's book. It states "???" this could mean ???

The following are the documents I have come across involving Mungo:
