There are a number of texts and information online that state the Ridel family that came across with William the Conqueror are the same family as the de Ridale family that received lands in Scotland from David 1 - this is not true.

The Ridel family quickly go female due to bad circumstances - the male hiers died on the ship 'White ???' and the only remaining male died under age without children. The name however was carried on through on of the sons of the surviving female heir taking the name of their mother to inherit the Ridel estates while his brother kept their father's name to inherit his estates.

The de Ridale family originated in Yorkshire and had a habit (early on) of using the land they occupied as their 'surname' so at the same time in Yorkshire they were known as de Ridale, de Brawby, de Habton, de Grimston.
